The National Review took a hard stand against Donald Trump’s liberal policies this week and now they’re facing his wrath. On Friday the GOP frontrunner countered by arguing that the National Review was a “dying paper” whose circulation was “way down.”
“The National Review is a dying dying paper. It’s circulation is way down. Not very many people read him anymore. People don’t even think about The National Review. I guess they want to get a little publicity. But that’s a dying paper. I got to tell you, it’s pretty much a dead paper.”
The National Review article that earned so much of Trump’s anger collected essays from some of our most important conservative voices who all argued the same thing – Donald Trump is NOT a conservative. Glenn Beck, David Boaz, Brent Bozell, Ben Domenech, Erick Erickson, Katie Pavlich and others all gave their voices to the NRO piece that reminds conservatives that Trump is simply not one of us.
Trump’s liberal positions aren’t in the distant past—he has openly promoted them on the campaign trail. Trump isn’t fighting for anyone but himself, which has been his pattern for decades. Conservatives have a serious decision. Do we truly believe in our long-held principles and insist that politicians have records demonstrating fealty to them? Or are we willing to throw these principles away because an entertainer who has been a liberal Democrat for decades simply says some of the right things? In short, do our principles still matter?
